Our next scheduled Dartmouth Broadcasting Overseer's meeting is set for February 5th and will mark the transition of power between the current and future Directorates. The New Year brings change at DB!

With the end of 2009 comes great change at Dartmouth Broadcasting. Most notably, the current News Director Madison Rezaei '12 has been named the next General Manager of Dartmouth Broadcasting. The selection process for the rest of the new Directorate is currently under way. Also, 99Rock personality 'Sketch,' has decided to step down after a 2.5 year stint as the voice in the afternoon in order to let emerging talent grow under the tutelage of Operations Manager Heath Cole. Hopefully this new year and new decade will begin a new and even brighter chapter of history for Dartmouth Broadcasting.

Dartmouth Broadcasting celebrated the New Year with the 'Top 99 of 2009 Countdown' on the Modern Rock Station, 99Rock. The countdown began on News Years Eve at 4pm and Continued throughout New Years Day.

Fall Philanthropy

Dartmouth Broadcasting had an active fall term contributing to three worthy causes; The Friends of Veterans of Vermont and New Hampshire, the Upper Valley Haven and Toys for Tots.

Through WFRD's connection with a local public access television show, 'Walking Through Life with Linda Carbino,' the station became involved with a benefit talent show that had all proceeds going towards the Friends of Veterans of Vermont and New Hampshire. The promotion of the talent show including six weeks of donated advertisements created by the staff of 99Rock and also three pro bono public appearances by WFRD Program Director David Lumbert '12 and General Manager Schuyler 'Sketch' Evans '10. Both Lumbert and Evans served as two of the three judges for the talent show.

Dartmouth Broadcasting continued to give back in the month of November and held the 'Hogs Against Hunger Food Drive' at Granite State Harley Davidson. We are pleased to announce that we were able to fill up an entire car full of food for the Upper Valley Haven. The food drive included a full advertising campaign and three days of live remotes from Granite State Harley Davidson. Thank you to all of those who supported our effort!

We are proud to announce that 99Rock was this year's official radio station for Toys For Tots of the Upper Valley. We spent the entire months of November and December promoting the toy donations over the 99Rock airwaves. We had several appearances promoting toy drop offs including on at Mascoma Savings Bank in West Lebanon on December 17th. Toys for Tots of the Upper Valley brought in a total of 4,865 toys for local children!

NHAB Golden Mic Awards for 2009

We are extremely proud to announce that WFRD was honored this year at the New Hampshire Association of Broadcaster's Golden Mic Award Ceremony this year. Dartmouth Broadcasting took home a Golden Mic Merit Award for 'Public Service Campaign of the Year' for our promotion of the Relay for Life at Dartmouth this past spring. It was an exciting night and station leaders including Operations Manager Heath Cole, WFRD Program Director David Lumbert '12, News Director Madison Rezaei '12 and General Manager Schuyler 'Sketch' Evans '10 all traveled to Concord together for the ceremonies. The handsome is currently resting on the fireplace mantle in the business office of the Dartmouth Broadcasting studios.

3rd Annual Halloween Community Festival

Dartmouth Broadcasting spent the 2009 Halloween afternoon on the front lawn of Tri-Kap for the 3rd Annual Halloween Community Festival. It was a good time and we gave away a huge bowl full of candy to Upper Valley youth.

When you walk into the Dartmouth Broadcasting lobby, you will notice (hopefully) some of our archival photos on the wall. One of my favorites has to be the a picture of WDCR at the construction of the Bonfire in the late 1950's. It is reassuring to know that we are still being asked by the Bonfire Committee to come out to the Green during the construction of the bonfire and play music. Of course the safety standards standards have been raised quite a bit over the years; the Dartmouth Emergency Medical Services tent is sitting directly to the right of our tent.

Recruitment 2009

Dartmouth Broadcasting focused a great deal of attention and energy towards recruitment this fall. The first two weeks of the fall came as the fulfillment and expression of months of planning. The majority of our biggest recruitment events fell between Monday September 14th and September 25th. On September 14th we were on the Dartmouth Green playing music and giving away promotional vitamin water for Capture the Mellon which was essentially a gigantic game of capture the flag. Between 1-4 we gave away nearly 200 hand sized bottles of Vitamin water and countless CD's. This event, along with the Dartmouth College Athletic Department Open House BBQ on Friday September 19th and the Friday Night Out remote later that night served as our main auxiliary events leading to our Open House on September 20th. Our Open House was really successful and we had a great turnout of people who wanted to get involved with the station. Along with the vast majority of the Dartmouth Broadcasting leadership attending the Open House, we had a past GM, George Whitehead '61, Th '62 at our Open House. It was obvious by '13's reactions to George that they were impressed that someone was still passionate about DB over 50 years since their freshman orientation.

Recruitment and retention of students within the organization of course can present themselves as cumulative causation situations that feedback into themselves... either towards the positive or negative. Thankfully for Dartmouth Broadcasting, I think that we have positive momentum. This momentum that eventually translated into an explosion of recruitment this fall. We have recruited roughly 60 people over the course of the past six weeks. Of course all of these new people have to be trained and brought into the fold which has been a great deal of work as well.

It is amazing to me that over half of the '13s in this picture are currently involved in the station. It will be interesting to see if some of these new people will one day become leaders at the station.

Fieldstock 2009

Homebrew Summer 2009

99Rock's preeminent Homebrew Host, Social Director Phil Aubart '10 is off this term at Officer Candidate School. In his stead, Maia Pfeffer '11 along with her weekly show on WebDCR titled 'Truffle Shuffle' with Micky Teng '11 which has its own blog, truffleshuffleradio.blogspot.com, has taken over Homebrew each Sunday night on 99Rock between 8 and 10pm. She has been doing a great job this term ensuring that each Homebrew show has a half an hour interview with local artist. The thirty minutes is a mixture of dialogue and music from the various artists.

North Haverhill Fair

99Rock spent two afternoons at the North Haverhill Fair on July 23rd and July 24th. On Thursday, Chris Garrett and General Manager Schuyler Evans '10 hosted aGuitar Hero Championship from 5 to about 10pm. The following day, there was a larger Street Team consisting of Zack Mason '10, WebDCR PD Shirine Sajjadi '11, Homebrew Host Maia Pfeffer '11, Chris Garrett and Sketch. Chris was set up at the remote by 5pm and the students came in a second car. The remote concluded when the Street Team introduced John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band at 8:30pm.

New DCR Logo!

Since DCR's transition from a terrestrial AM signal to a purely web based platform, we have been working a new logo for DCR that reflects that transition. All of our old logos showcased 1340 which has become irrelevant. Part of our update of DCR has been a transition away from WDCR, to either calling the station DCR or WebDCR. Our Internet Director Ricky Melgares '11 created this logo with the intent of it being stylish, modern, expanding our new WebDCR brand and also reinforcing that DCR is still Dartmouth College's Official college radio station. Differentiating between DCR and FRD has been a part of our larger goal; branding Dartmouth Broadcasting as a multi-faceted student run business that has educational components.

WebDCR Renovation

The last few weeks have been a very exciting time for DCR from a technical standpoint. We have actually begun addressing problems with the WebDCR studio that have been present since at least the fall of '06. There have been several key factors that have lead to movement on the technical front. The first namely being two substantial equipment donations, the first being a Broadcast Audio console coming from Cox Radio (as secured by past GM Eric McDonald '04). Operations Heath Cole and General Manager Schuyler 'Sketch' Evans '10 drove down to Connecticut to pick up the board from Eric's stations and took a tour of his facilities. It was a very exciting and long day. On the way home Heath and Sketch were hit with perhaps the worst downpour coming up 91 that either of them had ever seen (One car did not make it and the front was all smashed in). The second being a very well maintained Auditronics board, in fact, the same model as the boards sitting in WebDCR and the FM Studio. George Whitehead Dartmouth '61, Thayer '62 was able to get us the Auditronics board from NHPR due to his close connections with that station. George has come up to the stations multiple times from his home across the state in order to trouble shoot and give WebDCR the tender loving care that it really needs. Not only has he been working on the studios, he has also been working with students and imparting valuable knowledge to such interested students as Technical Director Tony Quincy '11 and WebDCR Program Director Shirine Sajjadi '11.

Relay For Life

Relay for Life was a huge success, bringing in more than $23,000 during this recession. All said and done, the event with set up and break down took more than 20 hours straight. 99Rock was at center stage and lent our sound system to the different acts that entertained the Relay for Life participants. We also did some entertaining of our own, including DJ Grimmee (former Marketing Director Andy Sloan '11) and Blair Randal '11 taking requests between 11 and 1am. There were hours of fun times and we were able to enjoy live music, comedy groups and other acts. I just wanted to thank all of the Dartmouth Broadcasting staff who made an appearance and contributed what they could.

Amongst other things, this event was a live remote. The first two hours of the remote consisted of doing my afternoon shift in its entirety on location - including the 7 O'clock Cage Match. After the first two hours of the live remote, we phoned/martied in two breaks an hour until 10am the following morning.

A special thanks to all of our members who participated in Relay.

4 Remotes, One Weekend

We had an extremely busy on the May 15th, 16th and 17th weekend that packed in four remotes in less than three days. We spent our Friday night at Benning St. Bar and Grill on Friday night. Then the next day, we had two remotes in two different states. We kicked off Saturday morning at the Richmond Middle School for the Singing For Life blood drive that benefited the American Red Cross. It was a gorgeous Saturday morning and there was a softball game raging in the field connected to the school. We had a young listener, Chris, hang out with us during the game because he loves radio and hated watching his sister pitch...and something hilarious happened.

Chris, age 10, asked General Manager Schuyler 'Sketch' Evans how he could get a job at 99Rock when he was older. Sketch told him that he needed to study hard so he could get into Dartmouth. At that, Chris told Sketch that his grades were 'crudish' and that he was not good at spelling. Chris asked Sketch if Sketch was good at spelling; Sketch replied weakly in the affirmative. Shortly thereafter, Chris heard an advertisement on 99Rock for Comcast and asked Sketch if he knew how to spell Comcast. "Sure, C-O-M-C-A-S-T-E." He completely blew it! An instant Dartmouth Broadcasting classic....

After the Singing for Life remote the Street Team spent the afternoon recuperating from giving blood and then headed into north country to the Bear Ridge Speedway for the opening night of the 2009 racing season. The street team consisted of over 9 people and had a great time watching the cars go in tight circles around the clay track. It unfortunately began raining and the night was cut short.

The following morning we were back into action for a live remote in front of the Hanover Inn, it was the Great Upper Valley Race benefiting Headrest. Headrest is a local substance abuse assistance center based out of Lebanon. Dartmouth Broadcasting made it into the D the next morning and looked pretty good. On top of getting a little free notoriety around campus, the D was nice enough to include a quote from a listener testifying to the fact that radio works - "Heard about it on the radio, and it sounded like a good idea and a lot of fun," Robert Diehm, a participant from Norwich, Vt., said. This past weekend, Sketch, Dave, and I spent Saturday morning with the Easter Seals, an organization to benefit disabled veterans in the Upper Valley. The organization held a car wash, a raffle and a bake sale at CVS in Hanover with 99Rock.

One of our favorite bi-annual remotes has to be the Vermonster 4x4. We all headed out there on Saturday May 2nd to give the people of Bradford Vermont a good time.

Bike Run

Dave Lumber '12 and General Manager Schuyler 'Sketch' Evans '10 spent their Sunday morning on May 3rd at the First Annual Bike Run put together by the Friends of Veterans, based out of White River Junction and sponsored by Rolling Thunder 1st Chapter in Vermont. They helped kick off the event which was a two hour bike ride through Vermont followed by a bbq open to the public and featuring the Tim Brick Band.

Board of Overseers Meeting

Overall, the directorate learned a great deal from the Board of Overseers meeting and feels relatively optimistic moving into the next two terms. We are all very appreciative of all the help that the Board of Overseers has conferred and would especially like to thank Carl Strathmeyer and for their work in helping the directorate plan for this term and the fall. The directorate and I believe that the future of the station remains bright and the radio will continue to be a valued service on that Dartmouth Campus. Dartmouth Broadcasting serves as a medium for discussion, expression, and news for students while simultaneously as a business where students can prepare for their futures. Dartmouth Broadcasting will remain a service to the Dartmouth Student body and community. If any Alumni has any questions or ideas regarding the station, feel free to contact me or sketch.

Dartmouth Broadcasting made good strides in campus notoriety on the consecutive weekends of April 17th and April 24th helping our friends on the first floor of Robinson Hall by donating remotes at the First Annual Ledyard River Festival and the 63 Annual Woodsmen's Weekend.

This is our normal remote set up, connecting our tuner to our Fender unit... however, we brought out the stops for next weekend.

As can be seen in this photo, the equipment set up was a bit unique. Our fender unit was about 10 feet off the ground and hidden by the gigantic plywood lumberjack.

Dartmouth Broadcasting was pleased to participate as a sponsor the 63rd annual Woodsmen's weekend on the Green at Dartmouth in the 100th year of the Dartmouth Outing Club. With over 30 teams from throughout the northeast, the Broadcasting staff witnessed an impressive array of skill in events ranging from chopping to log rolling to birling to an obstacle course.

Dartmouth Broadcasting welcomed the Dartmouth Class of 2013 during the annual Dimensions open house and activities fair. Prospective students enjoyed recording voiceovers for WFRD and WDCR as well as conversing with our staff. Over 100 students experienced the sights and sounds of the station.

Over the past few weeks the station has seen new growth, especially in Programming and News. We began the 'book' (ratings period) on April 2nd, only four days after the spring term began. In the past 10 days we have instituted a few major programming changes on air, have almost completely filled up time slots 24-7 on WFRD 99Rock and are preparing to launch the 'hourly' News Whips this week.

Our major programming changes involved moving two week day features, our request show known as '99Rock's Happy Hour' and a new music feature 'The 3 O'clock Rock Block' onto the weekends. Along with expanding some of our established features, we also added the 'Absolutely Live' Concert Series where we play recorded concerts during Saturday nights hosted by one of our jocks, currently Social Director Phil 'CheeseSteak' Aubart '10.

We have received at least 20 new names in the past few weeks of potential Dartmouth Broadcasting staff, ranging from sportscasters, newscasters, jocks and behind the scenes staff such as a photographer and Executive Producer of Homebrew Dave Lumbert '12. The new recruits came to the station mostly through our open house, job fair remote, campus wide blitzes and word of mouth.

This year 99Rock cosponsored The Annual Community Easter Egg Hunt put on by Tri-Kap fraternity. We showed our support by appearances by many of the 99Rock on air staff - all week shifters (Shirine, Sketch, Hoagie and Matt Knight) along with Homebrew Executive Producer Dave Lumbert '12 and photographer Ben Gonin '12.

FM Program Director David 'Hoagie' Kastner '12, AM Program Director Shirine Sajjadi '11 and I spent Saturday April 4th on a remote in Chelsea Vermont for the 'Cabin Fever Breakout,' concert in support of the Orange County Parent Child Center based out of Chelsea which provides necessary support for local families. On the way to the remote we drove past a monster truck intended for the Vermonster 4x4 which is coming up May 2nd. It was raining/snowing but I forced Hoagie to hop out of my vehicle and snap some pictures of the steel beast.

First Week of April

Our first week back this term was extremely intense. We had one open house, one remote and a band in the studios in the first four days of school. Our open house brought in a few students, including our newest directorate member, News Director Madison Rezaei '12.

2009 Home Show

We had a booth at the 2009 Home Life Show put on by the Hanover and Lebanon City Chambers of Commerce. The Home Show took course from Friday March 27th through Sunday March 29th. We had the 99Rock booth manned for everyone hour of the Home Show, which totaled 22hours of open doors to the public. The highlight of the show was our drawing for a brand new Guild guitar donated by Blue Mountain Guitar Center that had a retail value of over $2,200. We gave away countless new CD's and 99Rock t-shirts (only listeners got t-shirts...our common test was asking them if they knew any of our jocks). Overall it was a good event that gave us more exposure to the Upper Valley community and Dartmouth Community.

World Championship Fighting 6

Last weekend I took a little mid-finals study break and went down to Wilmington Ma. with our new Production Director Matt Knight '11 for World Championship Fighting 6. This was our third promotion with WCF, my second time down to the fight and we had a great time. Owner and Operator of WCF Joe Cavallaro asked me if I could voice some of the TV spots promoting the event and also some for use in WCF's television program, WCF Rewind. I jumped on the opportunity and was able to get my voice on Comcast SportsNet New England. As a thank-you for my voice-over work Joe Cav set Matt and me up with front row tickets at the fight... the view was awesome and it was a great way to prepare my last 12 page paper of the term.

WDCR Progress

WDCR has continued to make tremendous progress since I took over in the spring. The newest major improvement to WDCR has come in the form of a new automation system. While no students are on-air, from midnight to 6:00 PM every day, the automation computer in the studio chooses from a library of classic rock. This library ranges from the mid-60’s through the late 80’s, and includes such artists as the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, the Who, AC/DC, Aerosmith and Van Halen. The automation gives WDCR its own identity while still allowing all of the previous freedoms associated with student shows on WDCR.

WFRD has been a great help aiding in this technical upgrade, as they have been able to afford to give us a couple of computers to use for the purposes of automation and also to have an internet connected computer for DJ’s to use. This has allowed me to pursue station improvements as well as better promote the station when recruiting DJ’s.

There have also been significant accomplishments in the college variety (student show) portion of the schedule. For the first time in recent memory, WDCR has a full schedule of nighttime student shows, from 6:00 PM to midnight seven days a week. This was due in no small part to the Dartmouth Broadcasting BBQ and the additional recruitment efforts of Zachary Mason ’10, who has been a tremendous overall help in improving the station. We now have 13 new members to the station taking live shifts, almost all of which are freshmen.

There also have been major changes in the way that the music director now processes all new music, as Greg Dona ’10 has taken over as the new WDCR music director. Greg has been listening to and reviewing the new CD’s as they arrive at the station. Then, all DJ’s now receive a weekly e-mail regarding all new music in the station, which has proven to be beneficial.

In the spirit of change, WDCR has also started introducing its new logo. The logo was created with the input of all of the AM DJ’s as well as the Dartmouth Broadcasting directorate. This logo better reflects WDCR as Dartmouth College Radio and has been unanimously considered a major step up from the previous, outdated logo.

All of these in-house improvements have given us the chance to really start promoting the station around campus. This ranges from things as basic to putting up fliers to a live remote broadcast from the Homecoming Bonfire Build. The station as a whole has been a great help in planning and executing such events, and we have received tons of positive feedback in response to both our new image and our growing presence around campus.

Overall, I plan on continuing to improve the station going forward while starting to place a greater focus on air quality, as things have now reached the point in the AM rebuild process that I can now start to look more into the minor details.
